Human remains found in a spooky abandoned shed in New Hampshire are identified as belonging to escaped sex offender Michael Schilz.

Authorities have confirmed the skeletal remains found in a dilapidated shed near a New Hampshire prison belong to a wanted sex offender.

On April 21, Concord police acted on an anonymous tip about the remains discovered in a rundown structure opposite the prison. The investigation revealed the bones belonged to Michael Schiltz, aged 59.

“The remains seemed to have been inside the shed for quite some time,” a spokesperson for the Concord police stated in a release.

Details surrounding Schiltz’s death remain unclear, including when he passed away and how long his body was in the derelict building. Interestingly, he was never reported missing, as noted by Deputy Chief Barrett Moulton.

The remains were taken to Concord Hospital for an autopsy, and on Monday, they were officially identified as belonging to Schiltz, a transient who had previously been highlighted as a “Fugitive of the Week” for violating his parole.

A 2023 post from the Corrections Office showed a photo of Schiltz, who appeared bald and bearded.

He had been convicted in 2005 of felony sexual assault against a minor, according to records from the state’s Sex Offender Registry.

As of now, the cause of death has not been established.

The shed where Schiltz’s body was found has an eerie quality, reminiscent of settings in Stephen King novels. Its ghostly appearance is complemented by a gloomy history. The structure faces North State Street and is surrounded by overgrown brush and barren trees, with a broken basketball hoop positioned near a “Warning: No Trespassing” sign. A murky pond, dotted with algae, sits behind it.

This location has a darker past—it was the site of a fatal arson in 2005, a cold case that remained unresolved until arrests were made about 13 years later. Aside from the unsettling shed, the property appears largely unoccupied.

An employee from the nearby massage parlor expressed disbelief upon learning of the discovery. “We’re just shocked and surprised,” they remarked.
