Michelle Obama Shares That Barack Made a Joke About Her After Her Mother’s Passing

Michelle Obama Reflects on Loss of Her Mother

Michelle Obama recently opened up about her mother’s passing during a podcast discussion. She shared insights into a poignant conversation she had with her husband, former President Barack Obama, following the death of her mother, Marianne Robinson, who died in May 2024 at the age of 86.

In recalling that moment, Michelle mentioned how Barack remarked, “Well, you’re on the next level,” after her loss. She admitted her hesitance to embrace this idea, saying, “I’m really not ready to be on the next one,” indicating that she felt more comfortable delegating that “power” to others.

Michelle’s two brothers also reflected on their mother’s influence during a separate podcast. They emphasized that, even in her absence, their mother was actively preparing them for life without her. Craig Robinson humorously noted, “Mom is threatening to have been dead for 20 years,” highlighting the long-lasting impact of their upbringing.

The siblings discussed how significant their parents’ deaths were, regardless of their ages, with Michelle remarking, “It’s a huge change in your life. I don’t care how old you are.” She acknowledged the unique challenges of caring for her mother while still feeling the weight of being her daughter. “I’m like her boss around here, but she’s my mother after all. That’s a level of comfort, knowing that no matter how wise I was in the world, mom always knew more,” she reflected.

In another recent podcast with Jay Shetty, Michelle talked about undergoing treatment to assist her through this transitional phase in her life. She noted that, as her daughter matures and her public service work winds down, she’s taking more time for herself. “At this stage in my life, am I currently undergoing treatment because I am transitioning? I am 60 years old. I have finished something really difficult in life with my family. I am now an empty nester,” she shared. This acknowledgment of change and personal growth underscores her ongoing journey.
