GOP Representative Diana Harshbarger Proposes Legislation for Pregnancy Resource Website

Republican Representative Diana Hirschberger from Tennessee is reintroducing the Pregnancy.gov Act, aimed at creating websites that offer various pregnancy and postnatal resources. These would include information on adoption, tax preparation, and domestic violence services, consolidating resources for women in need.

The platform, accessible at pregnancy.gov, plans to combine existing public and private resources at local, state, and federal levels into a unified system. It aims to relieve women and families from the burden of searching for available help within their postal codes.

Supporting the bill are co-sponsors from Texas, Georgia, South Carolina, and Wisconsin. Hirschberger highlights that many women facing unexpected pregnancies might feel anxious about their ability to find support during and after their pregnancies. “Mothers shouldn’t feel isolated,” she mentioned in her press release.

The proposed legislation intends to streamline governmental resources and support programs. It also incorporates grant opportunities for states looking to enhance or establish similar resource websites. Notably, the act emphasizes alternatives to abortion and restricts organizations promoting abortion from receiving grant funds.

The services outlined in the act cover a range of support for mothers and families based on local resources. “When you’re blessed with pregnancy, whether planned or not, finding help shouldn’t be a struggle,” Hirschberger remarked. She believes the initiative will facilitate access to essential resources like prenatal care, transportation assistance, and support for domestic violence victims.

Additional initiatives mentioned include apps such as “I’m Standing with You” and “Her Plan,” emphasizing the need for strengthening pro-life resources. Kristan Hawkins, president of Students for Life Action, expressed concern for women in unplanned pregnancies, suggesting that while defenders of abortion claim to support life, they often neglect the needs of those women post-birth.

Penny Nance, CEO of a prominent women’s public policy organization, emphasized that women in these situations deserve to know they’re not alone. “Pregnancy.gov will centralize resources from local pregnancy centers to educational services,” she stated, expressing hope that Hirschberger can effectively advocate for the law.

Hirschberger concluded with a commitment to this initiative, expressing pride in leading the effort to support families and highlight the importance of life.
