New law in Washington requires priests to reveal confessions, causing anger among Catholics

Washington Governor Signs Controversial Clergy Reporting Law

On May 2, Washington Governor Bob Ferguson signed a law requiring clergy members, including Catholic priests, to report suspected child abuse or neglect, even if the information comes up during the Sacrament of Confession. This presents a challenging dilemma: obey the law or uphold the sacredness of confession.

Essentially, priests now face a choice between adhering to a legal mandate and the risk of automatic excommunication under church law if they disclose confessional information.

The Catholic Church is strongly against this new legislation, arguing that it infringes on First Amendment rights concerning religious freedom and disproportionately impacts clergy.

On “Blaze News Tonight,” commentators Jill Savage, Matthew Peterson, and Christopher Bedford voiced their disapproval, labeling it an atrocious law.

Bedford highlighted the significance of confession in the Catholic faith, equating its importance with that of marriage and baptism. He remarked, “People seek forgiveness and guidance through confession. If priests know they can’t be legally compelled to violate the confidentiality of this sacrament, it allows for an authentic spiritual connection.”

He also argued that focusing on this law distracts from the real issue: the protection of abusive priests within the church historically.

Reflecting on his own childhood, Bedford noted that the abuse cases were often covered up, rather than addressed in confession. “This is really an attack on the church and its sacraments,” he stated, adding that the bishops’ opposition is commendable.

Peterson chimed in, suggesting that the push for such laws reflects an anti-religious sentiment rather than a genuine commitment to child protection.

Bedford pointed out, “There’s a growing anti-Catholic atmosphere in the West,” referencing incidents like the burning of churches in Canada in 2021.

He recounted a priest’s words about evil being more visible now, saying, “The devil is no longer in the shadows; he’s out in the open.”
