House Democrats Reject Gulf of America Renaming
On Thursday, House Democrats voted unanimously against a resolution aimed at renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the US Gulf. The vote split largely along party lines, with one Republican and 205 Democrats opposing the measure, while 211 Republicans supported it, resulting in a 211-206 decision.
Representative Don Bacon from Nebraska was the sole GOP member who sided with the Democrats. The bill, led by Republican members, seeks to enforce a presidential order that would mandate federal agencies to update maps and documents to reflect the new name, should it pass.
One of the proponents, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene from Georgia, criticized Democrats for opposing the renaming. “They have no issue renaming military bases or removing statues of Lincoln and Washington,” she stated. “They don’t hate names… they just hate America.” Meanwhile, Rep. Mike Collins echoed her sentiments, suggesting that the move recognizes nations that he claims contribute to border issues.
This proposal essentially aims to formalize one of former President Donald Trump’s executive orders. However, Bacon described the resolution in less than flattering terms, questioning its necessity. “We are the United States, not Germany under Kaiser Wilhelm or France under Napoleon. We should be better than this,” he remarked.
