Trump criticizes Fed Chair Jerome Powell once more for not reducing interest rates.

President Trump voiced his frustrations with Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell on Thursday, specifically about the Fed’s reluctance to lower interest rates.

He described rate cuts as “like jet fuel” for the economy, yet it seems Powell is hesitant to implement those changes. Trump also remarked that Powell “doesn’t really care for me,” which adds a personal touch to his critique.

This week, the Fed chose to keep short-term borrowing rates steady, maintaining them in the 4.25% to 4.50% range since last December.

Powell noted that while large tariffs could potentially lead to rising inflation and unemployment, there haven’t been clear indications of those issues just yet. The Fed is opting to wait for more clarity on how tariffs will impact prices and jobs before making any significant moves. Once there’s a better understanding, they could take necessary actions, perhaps even preemptively, according to Powell.

Traditionally, cutting rates tends to help an economy. However, given the current inflation concerns, it could also trigger unwanted price increases, which Powell has been cautious about avoiding.

Trump appears to be vocal about his discontent regarding Powell’s monetary strategies, although at times he insinuates he might prefer a shift in leadership.

During a recent press conference, Powell deflected questions about Trump’s criticisms. He indicated his intent to finish out his term, which has about a year remaining.
