I Experience Being Both a Man and a Woman

Lorde, the singer-songwriter, recently shared her thoughts on “gender” during a red carpet interview at the Met Gala, mentioning that her custom outfit reflects her current state.

She wore a specially designed Tom Brown piece, which she described as filled with personal significance, stating, “It’s like an Easter egg. I love open backs,” while chatting with influencer Emma Chan Baren.

“This really symbolizes my journey with gender. I feel both like a man and a woman, don’t you think?” she expressed, alluding to the evolving conversations around gender identity.

Last month, Lorde made her musical comeback with a new single, “What Was That,” her first in four years. She mentioned that her upcoming album explores her evolving understanding of gender, marking an era she refers to as “rebirth.”

The song, she explained, was a pivotal piece of her self-expression, birthed after turbulence in her life—after returning to New York from London. “This is the first music that truly came from within me,” the 28-year-old noted. “It’s kind of scary but feels right.”

“Going back home brought a wave of sadness, and I kept asking myself, ‘What is this about?'” she shared, reflecting on the potential influences of her past relationships or the pandemic on her emotions.

“So much has flowed through me, and there’s a lot of unprocessed mysteries and pain,” the New Zealand artist admitted.

As she works on her new album, she feels more connected to her masculine side. “I saw this flyer about joining a band once that talked about ‘stone.’ At first, I didn’t quite grasp it, but it struck a chord with me,” she revealed.

“It made me think of the touchstones we carry along our journeys.” She feels that earlier connection deepened as she began exploring these themes in her music.

“We actually referenced that in our lyrics—this idea of having a ‘stone’ to guide us during our creative process,” Lorde added.

In another part of the conversation, she expressed feelings of unease regarding spirituality, mentioning her lack of a religious upbringing. “I sometimes feel quite young in my spiritual understanding, especially during performances,” she reflected.
