Joe Biden Addresses Cognitive Decline Allegations
Alyssa Farah Griffin, a co-host on “The View,” posed questions to former President Joe Biden regarding suggestions that his cognitive abilities had diminished during his presidency.
Following the memorable debate in June against Donald Trump, an article highlighted claims that the former president was experiencing cognitive issues. Griffin specifically referred to assertions about Biden’s performance last year, where a source suggested he was “wrong” and noted a “dramatic decline” in his mental acuity.
Biden rejected these claims, asserting, “They’re wrong. There’s nothing to support it. First of all, think about what was happening. When I took office, there was a crisis—nothing like the Civil War, but still serious. We were in the middle of a pandemic, facing enormous challenges.” He emphasized that despite these obstacles, his administration moved forward diligently.
After Biden’s remarks, his wife stepped in to further defend him against these allegations. “Alyssa, the authors of those books weren’t there with us in the White House. Joe was active all day long. Even at night, while I was resting, he was on the phone, reviewing briefings, engaging with the staff. It was relentless,” she said.
She continued, “Being president isn’t just a job; it’s a way of life. The presidency is a 24/7 commitment. The phone can ring at any hour, and Joe devoted himself entirely. I believe he did a commendable job.”
After Biden exited the presidential race on July 21, 2024, he participated in very few public events afterward, according to an Axios analysis. Some aides noted that they observed Biden appearing to age more rapidly, likely due to the pressures of the role and legal issues involving his son.
Griffin continued to dialogue about concerns regarding Biden’s mental capability. “I understand those worries,” Biden acknowledged. “Yet, it’s crucial to provide solid evidence if anyone asserts that I’ve lost my cognitive abilities. I believe I’ve done well even after stepping back from the race.”
After Biden’s withdrawal, he endorsed former Vice President Kamala Harris. In the subsequent election, Donald Trump defeated Harris decisively, winning all seven swing states and the popular vote.
Biden also shared during the discussion that he was “not surprised” by the election outcome, in part due to factors related to sexism.
