On Thursday afternoon, President Donald Trump expressed his enthusiasm to reporters outside the White House after learning about the election of a new pope.

Pope Leo XIV Becomes Historic American Pope
Cardinal Robert Prebust, who announced the name Leo XIV, is the first American pontiff in the history of the Catholic Church.
Along with his statement, the President shared a post on social media celebrating the moment.
“Congratulations to Cardinal Robert Francis Prevast, just named Pope. It’s remarkable to think he is the first American,” Trump noted. “What a thrilling and wonderful honor for our country.”
He added, “I really look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV. That will be a significant moment,” reflecting his anticipation.
The Vatican confirmed the electing of Pope Leo XIV shortly after white smoke emerged from the Sistine Chapel’s chimneys, signaling the decision. Thousands gathered in St. Peter’s Square as the news spread.
Protodeacon Cardimeter Dominique Mamberti declared the name of the new pope following deliberations among the cardinals which lasted about 24 hours.
Prevost, a 69-year-old Augustinian, soon appeared on the balcony of St. Peter’s Cathedral adorned in the traditional red cape of the Pope.
