Rep. Jim McGovern shared the heartbreaking details of his daughter Molly’s final moments, as she faced the battle against cancer.
Molly, who was only 23, passed away shortly after feeling nauseous during a pleasant meal with friends and family while vacationing in Assisi, Italy, according to reports.
Though she was enjoying a trip abroad, she had recently graduated from Northeastern University with a degree in political science and international affairs.
Molly was first diagnosed with a rare form of cancer when she was just 18 years old.
Despite her diagnosis, she managed to lead an active life, traveling far and wide—from her home in Worcester to places like Washington, DC, Boston, Australia, and Italy.
On the day of her death, she was in contact with Nancy Pelosi, a former U.S. Speaker and family friend who was getting ready for a trip to Italy for Pope Francis’ funeral.
Pelosi expressed a touching sentiment, saying, “I think His Holiness, a very saintly figure, wanted another angel in heaven, and that would be Molly because she was such a good person.”
Jim McGovern, who has been serving as a Democratic representative from Massachusetts since 1997, reflected on his daughter’s life during her funeral mass, jokingly noting his concern for Pope Francis.
Molly had a strong bond with the Pelosi family and was caring enough to send Paul Pelosi a “sunshine box” filled with gifts following his unfortunate attack at home in 2022.
Her faith played a significant role in her life, despite her not being heavily involved in church activities. When asked what she aspired to be, she cheekily replied, “I want to be a cardinal,” and questioned why women couldn’t hold that position.
Tragically, she was en route to Rome on Easter Sunday, but she succumbed three days later in Assisi.
Her mother, Lisa, reflected on Molly’s devotion, highlighting that her everyday necklace featured a St. Francis medallion. “She lived 23 rich years, but she often said the last five were the best, filled with miracles,” she noted.
A prominent member of the House Rules Committee, McGovern has represented his district for many years and has been a part of the congressional landscape since 2013.
