Global leaders respond to Pope Leo XIV

The Vatican revealed on Thursday that Robert Prible will become Pope Leo XIV, making him the first American to hold this prominent position in the Catholic Church. This announcement came just two days after a conclave convened to deliberate and vote on the new pope.

Following this groundbreaking announcement, various world leaders expressed their congratulations and support.

President Donald Trump took to social media to congratulate Prible, describing it as a “great honor” for the United States. He remarked, “What excitement for our country! I look forward to meeting Pope Leo XIV; it will be a meaningful moment!”

Chicago’s Mayor Brandon Johnson expressed his enthusiasm, celebrating the pope’s Chicago roots with a post that humorously noted, “All dopes, including the Pope, come from Chicago!” He added, “I hope to get home soon.”

In Italy, President Giorgia Meloni extended her warmest wishes to the newly elected pope. She highlighted the importance of his message of peace and brotherhood, especially in these uncertain times, and recognized Pope Leo XIV’s connection to Pope Francis.

Peru’s President Dina Boralto sent a congratulatory message, acknowledging Leo’s decade-long service in the country and emphasizing his love for the people. She stated, “May God bless him in his mission!”

Spanish President Pedro Sanchez also celebrated the elevation of Leo XIV, emphasizing the pope’s role in promoting dialogue and human rights in a world needing hope and unity.

French President Emmanuel Macron noted the significance of this moment, wishing peace and hope upon Pope Leo XIV’s election.

Ukrainian President Voldimia Zelenki expressed hopes for the pope’s wisdom and strength to fulfill his noble mission, while also appreciating the Vatican’s stance on international law and support for Ukraine amidst the ongoing conflict.

British Prime Minister Kiel Starmer called this a “significant moment,” sharing in the joy felt by Catholics worldwide.

Meanwhile, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo reaffirmed her commitment to world peace and prosperity in her congratulations.
