Fiji rugby player passes away in train incident

Josiah Raisuqe, a rugby player who recently secured a medal in Fiji at the Parish Games, tragically passed away in a car accident when a train collided with his vehicle. His rugby club, Castres, confirmed this sad news on Thursday. Raisuqe was just 30 years old.

The club expressed its sorrow on their website, stating, “The Castres Olympics are in mourning. It’s truly heartbreaking to learn that our player, Josiah Raisuqe, died in a car accident this morning.”

The entire Castres community is devastated by this unexpected loss. Raisuqe had joined the club in 2021 and was well-liked by teammates and fans alike.

Supporters gathered outside the Pierre Fabre Stadium, where they mourned Raisuqe, paying their respects in front of his wife. It was a poignant scene, illustrating the impact he had on those around him.

Raisuqe was a member of the Fijian Rugby Sevens team that won a silver medal at the Olympics, finishing second after a strong performance. His career in France began in 2015 when he signed with Stade Français, also playing for Nevers in the second division.

After his victory in 2021, he famously celebrated by lifting a judge above his head, a moment that brought him a red card but also showcased his joy for the game. He became a flanker for Castres in 2022 and played a crucial role in steering the team to the top 14 final.

“He shines on and off the field, a true pillar of the Fijian community at our club, and we’re all very close to him,” remarked Castres Chairman Pierre Ibez Lebor, underlining the deep connection Raisuqe had with the team.

Thoughts of Raisuqe’s fiancé and family are at the forefront as the community reels from this loss. His last appearance on the field was just two weeks ago.
