Trump Appoints Janine Pirro as Acting U.S. Attorney
On Thursday, former President Donald Trump announced the appointment of Janine Pirro as the interim U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. He referred to her as a “strong crusader” in a statement, highlighting her legal expertise.
Pirro has an extensive legal background, having served as the district attorney for Westchester County, New York, from 1994 to 2005, and as a judge in the Westchester County Court from 1991 to 1993. She later joined Fox News, where she became known for her passionate commentary and striking opinions on various political and legal matters.
Her appointment comes after Trump withdrew his support for Ed Martin Jr.’s candidacy for the role. While Trump has not clarified whether he intends to nominate Pirro for a permanent position, he confirmed her role as acting U.S. Attorney for Washington, D.C., in a post on True Social.
“Janine is very qualified for this position and is considered one of the top lawyers in New York State history,” Trump stated.
The announcement follows the lack of support from prominent Republican Senator Tom Tillis for Martin, connected to the events surrounding the Capitol on January 6, 2021. Nonetheless, later on Thursday, Trump mentioned that Martin would serve in a different capacity related to weaponization of the attorney general’s office.
Pirro, who graduated from Albany Law School in 1975, has more courtroom experience than Martin and was involved in establishing one of the nation’s first domestic violence units.
In previous political aspirations, Pirro ran for New York Attorney General in 2005 but was defeated by Andrew Cuomo, the former Democratic governor of New York.
Fox News expressed gratitude for Pirro’s contributions, saying she has been a significant part of the network’s success during her 14 years with them.
“Jeanine Pirro has been an incredible addition to ‘The Five’ over the past three years and has long been a beloved host,” a spokesperson for Fox News Media remarked.
