Trump appoints Fox News host Jeanine Pirro as leading federal prosecutor in DC

On Thursday, Donald Trump announced that Fox News host and former state prosecutor Janine Piro will take on the role of interim US attorney for the District of Columbia. This decision follows a communication indicating that a prominent Republican senator would not back the initial selections for the position.

Piro, previously a district attorney in Westchester County, New York, is known for her unwavering support of Trump. Interestingly, she has been involved in legal controversies herself, especially regarding false claims about the 2020 election that were cited against Fox in court.

The choice of Piro comes after Trump faced challenges with the withdrawal of the nomination of Ed Martin, who had served as the interim US attorney since the beginning of Trump’s second term.

Interim US attorneys can serve for 120 days before they need Senate confirmation to remain in the position. If they aren’t confirmed, or a new appointment isn’t made, the role defaults to a judge from the U.S. District Court in Washington.

Judge James Boasberg, who was appointed to the US District Court in Washington, had previously viewed Trump as adversarial toward the judiciary. He initiated investigations when Trump invoked alien enemy laws to target members of a Venezuelan gang, which was not well-received.

Trump’s connection with Martin was complicated, as Martin was accused of damaging his own confirmation chances by making aggressive threats against political opponents, including Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer. Reports suggest that even though he aligned with Trump, this approach troubled senators, including Republican Tom Tillis of North Carolina, who opposed Martin’s nomination.

Furthermore, Martin lacked support within the Department of Justice, where senior officials had grown wary of him, viewing his office as dysfunctional, which hampered their ability to advocate for him during the confirmation process.

Martin had openly claimed he would use his position to safeguard Trump, expressing a refusal to hire individuals from schools promoting diversity policies criticized by the president.

There were also dubious connections to individuals linked to the January 6 riots that might have raised eyebrows during the Senate hearings.

Trump shared the news of Martin’s replacement via his social media platform, lauding Piro as “in a class by herself.” She is the latest in a line of Fox personalities appointed to government roles, including Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth.

Piro began her new role on Thursday, somewhat downplaying her years at Fox News by emphasizing the importance of her new responsibilities, which could steer Trump clear of potential Senate setbacks.

Despite not having been involved in law enforcement for around 20 years, Piro’s long-standing friendship with Trump and her connections within the Department of Justice might make her a valuable asset.

Her ties to Trump date back decades, and while her reputation took a hit due to her false claims about election fraud—which resulted in litigation against Fox—Trump continues to support both her and her family.

Interestingly, during his first term, Trump had convictions related to Piro’s former husband, a lawyer and lobbyist, on charges of fraud and tax evasion.

After obtaining her law degree from Albany Law School, Piro took on the role of local prosecutor in New York, working on domestic violence cases. She had also been considered for various positions within the Trump administration, including Attorney General.
