Ben Cristman, a 21-year-old offensive lineman who recently transferred from Kentucky to UNLV, was discovered dead in an off-campus apartment in February, just a day before his birthday.
Reportedly, Cristman experienced chest pain during practice the previous day and had an EKG conducted at the team facility.
The Clark County Coroner’s Office revealed on Thursday that his death resulted from an irregular heartbeat, specifically a cardiomyopathy that affects heart muscle and arrhythmia.
Prior to his time at Kentucky, Cristman played for two seasons in Ohio.
He had been sidelined for the 2023 season due to a knee injury but participated in the special teams for the 2024 season.
He was anticipated to play for UNLV in the upcoming 2025 season.
“The hearts of our team are broken at the news of Ben’s passing,” remarked UNLV head coach Dan Mullen in a statement. “From the moment Ben arrived on campus a month ago, he improved our program. It was an obvious choice for our leadership committee, as he quickly earned the respect, admiration, and friendship of his teammates.”
“Our thoughts are with his family and all who knew him. Ben truly made the world a better place and deserves to be remembered.”
President Keith E. Whitfield expressed deep sorrow upon hearing of Cristman’s death, noting how rare and painful it is to lose someone so young within the university community.
“My heart aches for everyone who loved him,” he added. “On behalf of UNLV, our deepest condolences go to Ben’s family, friends, and teammates during this incredibly challenging time.”
Originally from Akron, Ohio, Cristman attended Libby High School, where he was recognized as a four-star recruit.
