Tokyo Man Following Stabbing Incident Near University

A man wielding a knife was arrested in Tokyo this week after expressing a desire to warn parents nationwide about the detrimental effects of strict parenting, stemming from his own difficult childhood, according to Japanese media.

The 43-year-old faces attempted murder charges for allegedly attacking a man in his twenties on Wednesday at Todaimate Station, which is located near the prestigious University of Tokyo.

Police indicated that the suspect inflicted injuries with a knife-like weapon, demonstrating intent to kill.

During the investigation, he revealed the pressures he faced from his parents, mentioning his struggle to stay in school.

He reportedly expressed to investigators, “I wanted to illustrate to these parents who push their kids into Todai that their intensity could lead to reckless behavior, potentially turning their children into criminals like me.” He chose the station for the attack, viewing it as symbolic of “educational abuse” at top universities.

Interestingly, he did not know the victim personally; he attacked the man simply because he was close by, according to NHK.

While Japan generally has low rates of violent crime and some of the strictest gun regulations in the world, incidents of stabbings and attacks do occur. This includes the assassination of former Prime Minister Abe in 2022.

Just a day after this knife incident, five staff members at an elementary school in Tokyo sustained minor injuries when two men entered the premises uninvited.

In a separate incident in 2021, a 24-year-old man stabbed a passenger and started a fire on a train while clad in clothing resembling that of the comic book character The Joker.

On Friday, a 34-year-old man was arrested in Osaka for allegedly slashing another man with a knife, also resulting in minor injuries.
