Newcastle is set to potentially frustrate some fans by revealing plans to revamp its club badges ahead of the 2026-27 season.
Executives at St James Park feel the current design, which dates back to 1988, isn’t quite suited for modern global branding, prompting the club to collaborate with designers and seek fan input to update what they consider outdated symbols.
This new version will be the fourth crest Newcastle has used since the 1950s. The existing badge showcases the city’s original coat of arms along with the Latin motto “Victory by Defence.”
Many supporters might feel a sense of loss with its potential removal, especially those who appreciate Newcastle’s historical roots as a Roman outpost along Hadrian’s Wall, which played a role in guarding the Scottish border. The current design features two seahorses and a lion holding the St. George flag, reminiscent of the city’s maritime heritage.
In an email to fans on Friday, the club stated, “As our club continues to grow globally, our symbols must evolve to keep pace.” They emphasized the need for clarity and confidence in their branding across various platforms, stating, “It’s time to update the coat of arms. This decision carries weight. We have a deep love for the current emblem, which symbolizes our journey through both triumphs and challenges, but it belongs to a different era and doesn’t always translate well in today’s digital landscape.”
The club’s fan advisory committee was consulted and reassured supporters that drastic changes are not on the table. An email mentioned, “Refine and Revive is the favored strategy,” while clarifying that visual elements related to Saudi Arabia, where the club’s ownership is based, are unlikely to be included in the new design.
