Released student: Columbia is provoking violence with its reaction to the pro-Palestinian demonstration

Mohsen Madawi, a student at Columbia University and a Palestinian activist, commented that the university’s reaction to the Palestinian protesters who entered the library only escalated the violence.

On Wednesday, Columbia contacted the NYPD, leading to police entering the library. Two staff members were injured during the incident, which also included graffiti with the phrase “Columbia burns out.” The individual involved reportedly did not leave or identify herself when requested.

“Columbia University is complicit in undermining democracy,” Mahdawi remarked in an interview. “They align with the Trump administration’s initiatives and subject students to punishment and distress.”

The recently bailed student noted that Columbia missed an opportunity to stand as a “beacon of hope,” which could have defused the situation.

Mahdawi, who was recently released after being detained by federal authorities during the Trump administration’s efforts to target pro-Palestinian activists on campuses, is the first student to be released after such arrests.

He encouraged those still detained to maintain their spirits, stating they shouldn’t allow this injustice to shake their faith in eventual justice.

Lymeisa Ozturk, a student from Tufts University who is also in custody, experienced a recent success when a judge ordered him to be transferred to Vermont, rejecting the Trump administration’s efforts to keep him in Louisiana.

Mahdawi expressed optimism regarding community efforts, stating, “People are working hard. The community is mobilizing.” He noted that the judicial system is still functioning properly, as illustrated in his case and others, underscoring the importance of checks and balances.

Despite his grievances with the university, Mahdawi intends to participate in graduation. “I plan to attend graduation because it sends a message,” he explained. “Education represents hope and light, and that’s something no one can take from us.”

The Trump administration has praised Columbia’s swift action in calling the police during the protest, expressing confidence that the university will adequately address the actions of those involved.
