Ohio Republicans support Ramaswamy for governor

Ohio GOP endorses Ramaswamy for governor

Ohio Republicans have endorsed Vivek Ramaswamy for the governor’s race during a recent Central Committee meeting. This endorsement, announced on Friday, strengthens Ramaswamy’s position as he seeks state office, especially after receiving significant backing from President Trump.

The vote showed overwhelming support for Ramaswamy, who bested Attorney General Dave Yost in the decision. Some attendees were initially uncertain about making the meeting due to the requirement of having two-thirds of the committee vote in favor.

After the vote, Ramaswamy expressed his gratitude on social media, noting a “historic” margin of 60 to 3. He emphasized his focus on growing the Republican voter base and aiming for success in the upcoming 2026 elections. His message was clear: it’s not just about party lines; it’s about winning every vote.

Yost was absent from the meeting, attending the funeral of a recently slain retired police officer. Despite his absence, he congratulated Ramaswamy in a statement and mentioned that his campaign would be deliberating its next steps. Yost’s campaign manager asserted that Ohioans deserve a broader choice in candidates rather than a predetermined selection of untried individuals.

Ramaswamy had been anticipated as a gubernatorial candidate for some time, officially entering the race in February. His connections to influential figures, including Trump and tech mogul Elon Musk, have helped him gain traction, receiving support from various notable names across Ohio and beyond. Preliminary polls indicate he has a considerable lead in the Republican primary.

Nevertheless, the competitive landscape may shift, as Lt. Col. Jim Tressel is reportedly pondering his own candidacy. Tressel has been chosen by term-limited Governor Mike DeWine to lead the state, following DeWine’s earlier decision to appoint John Husted as Deputy Commander.

There’s speculation about DeWine’s intentions, as a GOP leader shared concerns that the party establishment might be wary of further backing candidate Tressel. DeWine himself stated that it’s premature for him to endorse anyone, given the unclear dynamics of the race—especially with the primary still nearly a year away.

This endorsement adds another layer to the ongoing tensions within the GOP between traditional party lines and the Trump-aligned faction. Party insiders had hinted at the support for Ramaswamy, indicating he had enough votes to secure the backing ahead of time.
