Trump proposes reducing the 80% tariff on China

Trump Proposes 80% Tariff on China

On Friday morning, President Donald Trump remarked, “80% tariffs on China seem right!” This figure stands out as the administration continues to navigate complex trade negotiations. Interestingly, the proposed 80% tariff is significantly lower than the current 145% tariff on Chinese goods.

It’s worth noting that this is the first time Trump has shared a specific tariff figure since earlier suggesting that tariffs could be decreased. The timing is critical, especially with pending discussions between Swiss Treasury Secretary Scott Bescent and key trade officials from China.

Trade Talks on the Horizon

White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt commented that this suggested figure indicates where negotiations might head. However, she also emphasized that any unilateral move to lower tariffs by the U.S. should contingent upon concessions from China.

Despite the dynamic nature of these discussions, the White House maintains a stance of holding baseline tariffs at 10%, irrespective of developments in the UK’s trade deal with China.

Trump’s Perspective on Chinese Business Interests

Earlier this week, Trump claimed that China is “eager to do business” with the U.S., suggesting optimism about potential deals. He mentioned that Scott would be heading to Switzerland to meet with Chinese representatives, highlighting that the dialogues could lead to meaningful agreements. According to Trump, specifics about who initiates contact ultimately matter less than the outcomes achieved in these talks.

The Trump administration rolled out new tariffs on various countries earlier this month, following assertions that unfair trade practices were negatively affecting the U.S. economy. Subsequently, a proposal was issued to adjust these tariffs, with China responding by elevating tariffs on American goods to as high as 125%.
