Newark Mayor Ras Baraka taken into custody during protest against ICE detention center

Newark Mayor Protests ICE Facility

On Friday afternoon, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka held a protest outside an ICE detention center, highlighting the recent arrest he faced from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. He expressed a firm commitment to shutting down the facility.

A News 12 New Jersey reporter, Amanda Lee, shared a video on X around 3 PM showing Baraka being escorted away from the detention center by Homeland Security officials.

Baraka reiterated his intention to close the ICE facility, asserting that it operates without the necessary permissions.

Following his arrest, attorney Alina Haba commented that “no one has surpassed the law,” emphasizing that Baraka’s actions disregarded legal boundaries by trespassing despite previous warnings from Homeland Security.

The facility reopened on Tuesday, reinforcing Baraka’s determination to see it shut down. He claims the center lacks proper operational authorization.

This is a developing story; updates will be provided as they become available.
