Balkan beauty hedge fund manager banned from the US due to immigration falsehoods

LOS ANGELES – A Miami hedge fund manager, known for his flashy Instagram posts, has received a five-year ban from entering the U.S.

Jasmina Midzic, managing director at Typhon Capital Management, was recently removed from a flight in Los Angeles. She’s recognized for her glamorous lifestyle photos, including some where she wears a bikini in exotic locations. The incident occurred this past Sunday, as per a source close to the situation.

Midzic, a 36-year-old Croatian with permanent residency in the UK, had come to Los Angeles to participate in the Milken Institute Global Conference, a high-profile event attended by various financial leaders, including Treasury Secretary Scott Bescent and Elon Musk.

Her Instagram account showcases her luxurious trips abroad, reinforcing her jet-set image. However, she admitted to authorities over the weekend that she was working illegally in the U.S. on a visitor visa, earning $13,000 for her Miami Beach job, according to multiple senior officials.

After her removal, Midzic returned to England on Monday and later shared a selfie from London’s Mayfair district, dressed casually in a baseball cap and sports jersey. In her post, she made vague comments about challenges and perseverance.

An investor relations expert who was approached denied any wrongdoing in an emotional statement, claiming, “My friends are U.S. judges and prosecutors. I will not break the law. This deeply violates my rights.”

Midzic reported being held at LAX for 26 hours before being sent back to Heathrow. She claimed that as a European working for a hedge fund, her perspective had not been taken seriously. Additionally, she expressed frustration over being pursued as she chose not to pursue U.S. citizenship.

She had also worked as a manager for a litigation finance firm that connects law firms with investors. The founder of both firms defended her, asserting that they had adhered to immigration laws.

Midzic plans to visit the U.S. Embassy to address what she describes as “misunderstandings.” Her attorney warned that the situation could be damaging to her reputation, emphasizing the importance of adhering to immigration regulations.

Midzic highlighted her efforts to obtain a legal work visa in 2023, which was denied. She confirmed her prior employment at Typhon Management and another company since 2021.

According to officials, when she arrived at LAX, they suspected her frequent visits to the U.S. and questioned her. She was unable to provide adequate proof of her right to work during her tense exchange with Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

Senior sources mentioned that visas like hers are intended for tourism, not for employment purposes. Midzic had reportedly attempted to open discussions about her work status but stumbled in her explanations.

While federal judges can officially deport individuals, CBP has the authority to deny entry, particularly to those who attempt to circumvent the rules. Conversely, individuals facing a refusal can appeal at a U.S. Embassy if they have a compelling case.

Midzic’s past affiliations with the Milken Conference and other elite events suggest a high-profile career, but her failure to comply with the regulations has cast a shadow. Sources close to her claimed she intended to leverage political connections within the Trump administration to challenge the ban.

New York immigration lawyer Michael Wiles, who previously represented notable figures, highlighted the increased scrutiny and strictness on immigration enforcement in recent years.

Midzic has extensive experience in investor relations in both the UK and Switzerland, promoting her capabilities in the financial sector.

Typhon Capital Management, established in 2008, is described as a multi-strategy hedge fund, with prior scrutiny from the SEC regarding compliance with federal laws.
