Trump permits white South Africans to enter the US as refugees

The Trump administration is set to begin resettling white South African refugees in the United States next week, referring to them as victims of “unfair racism.” This decision comes despite the administration having paused most refugee resettlement programs.

Stephen Miller, speaking to reporters, emphasized that the situation in South Africa aligns with the core reasons for establishing refugee programs: persecution based on race. He classified this as race-based persecution. Recent laws in South Africa permit the government to seize land without compensation under certain conditions.

The initial group of refugees represents just a fraction of what Miller described as a broader relocation initiative. Documents acquired by the Associated Press indicate that U.S. officials, including the Deputy Secretary of State and representatives from the Department of Health and Human Services, will be involved in the processing of these refugees.

Amid a crackdown on immigration, President Trump has previously stated that only refugees who can fully assimilate will be allowed into the country. The State Department confirmed that the U.S. Embassy in Pretoria is conducting interviews in line with Trump’s executive directive addressing the actions of the South African government.

Many of these refugees are descendants of earlier Dutch settlers in South Africa. However, the South African government criticized the U.S. efforts, arguing that they overlook the historical context of colonialism and apartheid.

U.S. states like Minnesota, Idaho, and Alabama are expected to receive these refugees. Tensions continue to simmer, as Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently expelled the South African ambassador, labeling him as a politician who is detached from American values and commenting that Trump leads a white supremacist movement. Rubio also skipped a G20 Foreign Ministers’ meeting in Johannesburg as a form of protest.

South Africa’s Foreign Ministry responded to the allegations of racism as being largely unfounded, expressing regret that South Africans might be relocating to the U.S. under the pretense of seeking refuge, suggesting that this move is politically motivated to undermine South Africa’s democratic framework. While they stated they would not stop anyone from leaving the country, they questioned their legitimacy as refugees.
