Thai Vacation Turns Nightmarish for British Couple
A British couple’s vacation in Thailand took a harrowing turn when 23-year-old Liam suffered severe injuries after falling 30 feet from a waterfall he discovered through TikTok. His partner, Lucy, heroically held onto him for two hours on a narrow ledge, preventing him from falling another 100 meters until rescuers arrived.
The couple now faces medical expenses exceeding £100,000 (approximately 1.13 crore) and an urgent need for medical evacuation back to the UK, with their travel insurance situation remaining unclear.
Lucy shared her experience, stating, “There were many families around, but Liam was busy taking pictures. When he fell, I saw him scream for help, realizing he was on a precarious rock shelf.” She detailed the moment she had to hold him tightly, sitting in a pool of blood, “I had to make sure he didn’t fall further.” Liam’s injuries included visible bone fragments sticking out of his legs and a fractured skull. It was, in her words, “absolutely horrifying.”
Now in the hospital, doctors have confirmed multiple fractures, but Liam cannot leave until his treatment costs are settled. Consequently, the couple has turned to crowdfunding to cover the expenses. Lucy pleaded for assistance, emphasizing that, “This is our last option, as his bill exceeds £100,000 and a medevac is essential.”
The accident is part of a troubling trend at the same waterfall, where incidents have occurred before. In 2019, two tourists died after slipping on rocks, yet the site continues to draw visitors searching for stunning views, despite existing warning signs.
In response to recent events, the Thai government has extended a free insurance scheme for international tourists, covering up to THB 500,000 (12 lakh rupees) following the incident. However, many tourists remain unaware of such programs, which can lead to unexpected financial hardships after accidents.
