Stats reveal how effectively OG Anunoby has defended against the Celtics.

The recent numbers have been impressive.

Since joining the Knicks in December 2023, OG Anunoby has become a key player in their defense. Notably, the Celtics have struggled to score against him, often opting to avoid taking shots entirely when he’s matched up with them.

During the first two games of the Eastern Conference semifinals, Boston’s Jason Tatum attempted just one shot while being defended by Anunoby, according to NBA tracking data. Meanwhile, Tatum’s fellow Celtics player, Jaylen Brown, had a slightly better shooting record, going 7-7.

Anunoby’s strong defensive skills have carried over from his time with the Raptors to the Knicks, where he had previously celebrated a championship six years ago. He’s been seen as a crucial addition to the team.

After suffering a hamstring injury that limited his play against the Pacers last year, Anunoby’s solid performance has helped the Knicks secure a notable 2-0 lead going into Game 3.

“That’s not easy,” Jalen Branson remarked after a practice session in Tarrytown. “These are great players, so we need to support him. He’s done an incredible job, and we need to back him up.”

On the last day of the regular season, Anunoby expressed that he deserves the title of Defensive Player of the Year. He posted the highest defensive ratings among Knicks starters during the regular season (112.3) and continued to excel as the playoffs began, especially in crucial moments.

Tatum struggled in the series, shooting just 28.6% and scoring only 36 points, admitting they need to “improve” their game. Mikal Bridges made a pivotal steal from Brown in overtime during Game 1, redirecting attention in Game 2, but Anunoby’s persistent defense left the Celtics scrambling for other scoring options.

Statistically, Anunoby was a prominent defender against Tatum for nearly seven minutes during the games.

Branson mentioned that the Knicks were not caught off guard by Anunoby’s defensive prowess.

He continues to shine on the most significant stages, especially when Tatum hasn’t found success against the Knicks, who are the defending champions.

“I think I’ll place him alongside Mikal and Josh. The versatility of that wing is immense,” Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau said. “And it’s also improved our defense overall.”
