UN Secretary Welcomes India-Pakistan Ceasefire
The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, expressed support on Saturday for efforts to resolve ongoing conflicts, as India and Pakistan mutually agreed to a ceasefire.
“We are observing the situation closely and welcome any initiatives aimed at de-escalation,” stated Fahan Hak, the deputy spokesperson for the Secretary-General, in comments to PTI.
This ceasefire, facilitated by the United States, followed hostilities where both countries targeted each other’s military assets, raising concerns over escalating tensions.
Earlier, US President Donald Trump noted that after extensive discussions mediated by Washington, India and Pakistan had consented to a “full and immediate” ceasefire.
“After a lengthy night of talks, we’re thrilled to announce an agreement for a comprehensive ceasefire between India and Pakistan. Both nations demonstrated remarkable judgment in addressing this matter,” Trump remarked.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio revealed that over the past two days, he and Vice President JD Vance had engaged with leaders from both nations, including Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Shebaz Sharif, along with military and foreign affairs officials.
Rubio added, “We are pleased that both governments will commence discussions on various topics in neutral locations.” He commended the leaders on their sound decision-making, emphasizing the importance of pursuing peace.
Additionally, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar remarked on social media that both nations have reached an understanding to cease fire and halt military actions.
This announcement follows India’s recent military strikes in response to a prior attack, targeting suspected terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Kashmir. Pakistan has since retaliated by striking multiple military sites within India.
