Kate Fagan, a former ESPN Around the Horn participant, used her last appearance on the show to advocate for allowing boys to compete in women’s sports.
Fagan, who played basketball at the University of Colorado and worked for ESPN from 2012 to 2018, was named the winner of the episode on Thursday. As part of the show’s tradition, she was granted a 30-second segment to discuss a topic of her choice.
She chose to address issues surrounding transgender athletes in sports.
“I know this is my last time, and I want to say something meaningful for this platform. It’s essential for trans kids to be able to play sports,” she expressed. “Think back to what you valued most about your sports experiences. It’s mostly about memories—like when you found out your favorite number or formed connections and shared joy, those moments of camaraderie.”
“There’s a sense of belonging when you’re playing well with your teammates. Gender doesn’t even come into play. Trans kids are just like everyone else.”
“Sports are about joy. They represent humanity. The more people who can participate, the better for everyone.”
In February, shortly after taking office, President Trump amended Title IX rules at the federal level, which could impact schools by withholding funding if they permit trans athletes to compete as women.
Currently, there’s no federal law that bans transgender children from engaging in sports. Trump’s directive specifically aims to bar male athletes from competing in women’s categories.
X users quickly highlighted this contradiction.
Around the Horn is set to air its final episode later this month.
