Trump’s Major Trade Commitment to India and Pakistan Following Ceasefire Deal

Washington:

President Donald Trump announced that the U.S. plans to “significantly” boost trade with both India and Pakistan. This statement follows recent tensions marked by military actions and a fragile ceasefire agreement in the Kashmir region. Trump also indicated a willingness to help facilitate discussions aimed at resolving the Kashmir issue.

A ceasefire was reached between India and Pakistan on Saturday evening; however, reports of artillery fire surfaced shortly after. While there were explosions near the Line of Control (LoC), India condemned Pakistan for breaching the ceasefire. In response, Indian forces strongly addressed these “repeated violations,” and combat activity subsided by dawn.

Trump took to social media to commend leaders from both nations, urging them to recognize that it was “time to stop the current invasion,” and reaffirmed his commitment to enhancing trade with them.

“It’s not widely discussed, but I am set to significantly increase trade with both these exceptional countries,” he stated.

Additionally, Trump expressed his intention to collaborate with both New Delhi and Islamabad to explore potential solutions for Kashmir, humorously noting it might take a “million years.”

Tensions between India and Pakistan

The relationship between India and Pakistan has deteriorated significantly following deadly terrorist attacks in Pahargam, Jammu, and Kashmir last month. India blamed Pakistan for the April 22 attack, citing evidence that traced back across the border.

In retaliation for the attack, India initiated Operation Sindoah this week, aimed at dismantling terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. Indian officials emphasized that their operations were not directed at civilian or military targets, but solely at terrorist outfits.

Pakistan responded with substantial artillery fire, leading to drone and missile strikes aimed at civilian areas. India’s air defense was successful in intercepting most of these projectiles. In turn, India targeted military installations in Pakistan, including a key air base, resulting in considerable damage.

Representatives from India’s Army, Navy, and Air Force later provided briefings indicating they were “fully prepared, constantly vigilant, and committed to defending the nation’s sovereignty.”

By the afternoon of May 10th, India had effectively countered Pakistan’s aggressive operations, prompting Pakistani Director General of Military Operations Major General Kashif Abdullah to directly reach out to his Indian counterpart, Rajiv Gai, to discuss the ceasefire agreement.
