Trump Signs Executive Order for Immigrant Departure Program
In a recent move, President Donald Trump has signed an executive order aimed at establishing a self-abolition program for undocumented immigrants, which includes offering free flights and cash incentives to encourage voluntary departure from the United States. Dubbed “Project Homecoming,” Trump claims this initiative will save taxpayers “billions and billions of dollars.”
In a video announcement, Trump explained that this program is the first of its kind. He indicated that undocumented immigrants, referred to as “illegal aliens,” are subject to potential punishments, including deportation, at the government’s discretion.
According to the president, the initiative aims to facilitate exit for those living in the U.S. without legal status, allowing them to leave without facing legal repercussions. He urged those affected to take the opportunity provided by the program.
Trump was quoted as saying, “Illegal aliens can simply show up at the airport and receive free flights from our country.” He also mentioned the launch of a mobile app called CBP Home, enabling individuals to book these flights.
The administration has introduced “important exit bonuses” to incentivize self-reporting of illegal immigration. Earlier this week, the Department of Homeland Security announced that it would provide migrants with a $1,000 bonus, which they claim is a cost-effective alternative compared to the more than $17,000 currently spent on arresting and deporting undocumented immigrants.
Trump emphasized that these bonuses could result in significant savings for taxpayers, suggesting that accomplishing a reduction in undocumented residents could ultimately lead to trillions of dollars saved.
Moreover, the president warned that those who choose not to comply with the program would face severe consequences, which he described as serious. However, he also noted that there might be a pathway for those who leave to return to the U.S.
He mentioned further penalties for undocumented immigrants, which could include lengthy prison sentences, significant monetary fines, property seizures, and other serious repercussions.
Since his inauguration, Trump has implemented various strategies targeting immigration, including arrests of undocumented individuals and challenges to judicial limits on governmental authority regarding immigration policies.
