If you notice this line on your nail, contact your doctor right away.

(Nexstar) – What started as a “small brown line” on one woman’s nail turned into a rare, potentially life-threatening condition that reflects the importance of catching symptoms early.

Lauren Koltcz noticed the mark on her left thumbnail last May and thought to herself, “That’s strange.”

Although rare and often missed, experts caution that lines like these should be taken seriously. Dr. Lindsey Zubritsky, a dermatologist from Mississippi, urged her 1.6 million TikTok followers, “If you notice a dark vertical streak on your nails, it’s worth getting checked out.”

Koltcz brought it up with her doctor, who referred her to a specialist.

Koltcz recounted how she hesitated to act: “My doctor recommended I see a dermatologist, but being a mother and a teacher, I just kept putting it off,” she told the Cleveland Clinic.

Nearly a year later, she found herself on TikTok, which is known for both valuable and misleading advice. This time, the content inspired her to take action.

“I stumbled upon a dermatologist who said if you see these signs on your nails, you should definitely consult your doctor immediately. I thought, ‘Oh, this doesn’t sound too good.’

After a visit to a dermatologist at the Cleveland Clinic, tests confirmed she had melanoma.

The biopsy revealed melanoma in situ, which means the cancer cells were only in the upper skin layer and hadn’t spread, so the prognosis was favorable.

Dr. Vidimos pointed out that, unlike typical cases of melanoma, Koltcz’s was not due to sun exposure, which can complicate diagnosis with other health issues.

Having had the entirety of her left thumbnail removed, Koltcz expressed relief about her recovery and emphasized the need for early detection. “I thought a lot about my kids during this whole ordeal. So, I urge everyone to check your health regularly. Don’t wait. Prevention matters,” she advised.
