Bud Black receives support before 21-0 defeat

The Rockies, who have struggled throughout the season, faced a harsh reality check with a 21-0 defeat on Saturday, bringing their record to 6-33. This disheartening loss came shortly after General Manager Bill Schmidt publicly backed manager Bud Black.

“I think our guys are still putting in the effort,” Schmidt mentioned, expressing confidence, albeit cautiously. “Everyone’s working hard daily, and most of the time, they bring the energy. There’s a lot of frustration, but I believe in our direction.”

This loss marked the Rockies’ eighth consecutive defeat and, if things don’t change drastically, they are on track for their third straight season with 100 losses under Black, who is 67 years old.

The Padres’ overwhelming performance included five home runs, contributing to one of the largest shutout victories in MLB history. The shutout was executed impressively by Padres pitcher Stephen Colek, who shone in only his second major league start.

With this game, Colorado has now become the first team to surrender at least ten runs in consecutive games since the Orioles did so in 2021.

“I really empathize with our fans and everyone involved,” Schmidt acknowledged. “We know we have more talent than this, but the results aren’t reflecting that right now. We need to push through this and find a way out.”

He added, “There are still a lot of games ahead, and I believe we can turn it around, but it requires the entire team’s commitment.”
