Some Air Travel Gear is So Outdated We Have to Purchase Replacements on eBay

Transport Secretary Sean Duffy mentioned on MSNBC’s “Meet the Press” that major updates are needed for air travel control equipment.

NBC host Kristen Welker asked, “We discussed that this issue may extend beyond Newark. Are there other airports that concern you?”

Duffy responded, “I’m anxious about the entire airspace. A lot of our equipment is outdated, and finding parts for newer models is challenging. Sometimes you have to resort to eBay for spare parts. We’re working with very old technology—copper wiring instead of high-speed fiber optics. We really need to address that.”

Welker then inquired, “Is it safe to fly in the US at this moment?”

Duffy replied, “We definitely have the safest airspace around. Air travel is considerably safer than other forms of transportation—my family flies frequently. However, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be cautious about potential issues on the horizon; there are risks that need examining, and we must monitor any significant concerns in the airspace.”
