Rockies let go of manager Bud Black and bench coach after poor season start

The Rockies have finally taken a step after a rough start to their season.

Colorado announced the dismissal of manager Bud Black and bench coach Mike Redmond, following a dismal 7-33 record, despite a win against the Padres on Sunday. Just the day before, they suffered a staggering 21-0 loss to the same team.

In a statement released by the Rockies, CEO Dick Monfort expressed, “We haven’t found acceptance this season, especially following the last two years. The fans deserve better, and we have the talent to achieve more.”

He continued, “We all have responsibilities for how this season is playing out, but these changes are necessary. We can use the remaining time in 2025 to focus on improving as a team, assessing our operations, and appropriately transitioning to a new phase of Rockies baseball.”

Monfort also acknowledged the contributions of Black and Redmond over the past eight years, thanking them for their hard work and wishing them well in the future.

First base coach Warren Schaeffer has been named the interim manager, while Clint Hurdle steps in as the interim bench coach.

General Manager Bill Schmidt noted, “I believe Warren is the right choice to guide us through the rest of the season, develop our young talent at the major league level, and help the club return to a better style of baseball.”

Black, with a record of 544-690 over nine seasons at the helm, becomes the second MLB manager to be fired this season, following the Pirates’ decision to part ways with Derek Shelton just last week.
