Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to meet in Turkey this week to discuss ending the ongoing war that has lasted for three years.
However, Zelensky stated that negotiations should start with a complete halt to hostilities.
“We are expecting a full and lasting ceasefire to commence tomorrow, which would provide a solid foundation for diplomacy. There’s really no point in prolonging the violence,” Zelensky mentioned in a post on Sunday.
“I’m looking forward to seeing Putin in Turkey on Thursday. I really hope there are no excuses from the Russian side this time,” he added.
Putin had proposed a direct meeting in Istanbul on Sunday, aiming for a sustainable peace, but shortly after that, reports emerged of new drone attacks on Kyiv by Russia.
Former President Trump has urged both nations to agree on a temporary ceasefire, a plan that only Ukraine has currently embraced. He also encouraged Zelensky to take up the offer to meet with Putin in Turkey.
“Putin isn’t interested in a ceasefire agreement but seems more inclined to negotiate amidst potential violence in Turkey on Thursday. Ukraine should come to an agreement soon,” Trump stated.
He suggested that the meeting would help clarify the prospects for negotiations, noting that European and American leaders could evaluate the situation to make informed decisions moving forward.
“There’s growing skepticism about Ukraine’s willingness to sign any agreement with Putin, who appears more focused on celebrating World War II victories,” Trump added.
This initiative coincides with Ukraine and its European allies, including France, Germany, Britain, and Poland, applying pressure on Russia for a 30-day ceasefire. Trump has also warned that without a deal, Russia may face increased sanctions.
