Disney’s CFO Commends Trump’s Emphasis on Bringing Film Production Back to the U.S.

Disney’s CFO Hugh Johnston expressed support for President Trump’s commitment to revitalize the US film industry.

During his appearance on CNBC, Johnston acknowledged that while he didn’t fully endorse Trump’s tariff suggestions, he felt “encouraged” by the president’s interest in strengthening the industry.

“It’s a bit premature to calculate with 100% tariffs and so on,” Johnston remarked. “What really inspired me was the president’s desire to support the industry; we discussed ways to enhance its strength. We’re definitely open to collaborating on how to achieve that.”

Disney boasts a significant filmmaking infrastructure in the US but also relies heavily on its major franchises, like Star Wars and Marvel, which have a considerable presence in the UK and other regions. Imposing heavy tariffs on international productions could greatly affect Disney’s core properties.

The president’s aim to restore the US prominence in film and television has met with mixed reactions in Hollywood.

California Governor Gavin Newsom, an opponent of Trump, urged against tariffs and submitted a set of proposals to aid the film sector.

Others have harshly criticized the idea of tariffs. Director Ava Duvernay described Trump’s approach as a “catastrophe” for the film industry.

A number of industry insiders and producers have voiced their disapproval of the tariff plan. One producer told Variety that the film industry operates globally, asserting that such tariffs “don’t make sense” in that context.

However, some have lauded the president’s initiative to support the film industry. Comedian and podcaster Theo Fong welcomed the efforts, insisting that “it’s a wrap” if swift action isn’t taken.
