Rockies part ways with Bud Black

The Colorado Rockies have become the second Major League Baseball team to make a managerial change this week, following a troubling start to the 2025 season. The team announced they have let go of manager Bud Black and bench coach Mike Redmond. Warren Schafer, who was the third base coach, has been named the interim manager, while Clint Hurdle steps in as the interim bench coach.

Rockies owner Dick Monfort stated, “What we’ve seen so far this season, especially after the last two seasons, just isn’t good enough. Our fans deserve more, and we know the team has the potential to do better. We all bear some responsibility for how this season is going, but these changes are essential.” He added that the rest of the season should be used to develop players and assess various operational aspects as they look forward to the next chapter of Rockies baseball.

In the past week, the Rockies faced a humiliating 21-0 loss against the San Diego Padres. They managed to bounce back slightly with a 9-3 victory, but that only marked their seventh win of the season out of 40 games played. The team’s performance has been lackluster, with a significant run differential of -128 and only 133 runs scored thus far.

The Rockies have not reached the playoffs since 2018 and have struggled to maintain a winning record, finishing last season at 61-101 after a disappointing 59-103 season in 2023. Bud Black, who had been managing the team since 2017, leaves with a record of 544 wins against 690 losses over his eight-year tenure.

Interestingly, the Rockies are the second team in a week to make such a decision after the Pittsburgh Pirates fired their manager Derek Shelton earlier.
