Trump dismisses chief copyright official Shira Perlmutter.

Recently, President Donald Trump’s administration dismissed the head of the US Copyright Office, Shira Perlmutter, shortly after also letting go of Carla Hayden, the Congressional librarian. Perlmutter had been overseeing the Copyright Office, which is part of the Library of Congress, until her unexpected termination on Saturday. An email from the White House informed her that her role would be coming to an end.

This move to fire Hayden, notable as the first female and African-American Congressional librarian, seems part of a broader strategy to remove government officials who are seen as opposing Trump’s agenda.

Democrats expressed outrage over the dismissal, referring to it as “strangeness.” The White House hasn’t commented yet on the situation.

Hayden had appointed Perlmutter to lead the Copyright Office back in October 2020. Reports indicate that she too was informed of her firing via email.

The email to Hayden reportedly started with a formal note from the presidential office, thanking her for her service and indicating her time in the role was ending.

Perlmutter’s office had been busy recently with a report that explored the use of copyrighted materials in training AI systems. This report is significant, especially in a time when such issues are evolving rapidly.

Back in January, Perlmutter emphasized the importance of human creativity in copyright protection. She pointed out that even if AI is involved in creating work, it should still hold copyright—yet, there’s an ongoing debate about how machine-generated content fits into this framework.

With her background, Perlmutter holds a law degree and has experience with copyright and intellectual property, having previously worked in the Copyright Office during the late 1990s.
