Eugene Grigor, 45, has pleaded guilty to the murder of Leslie Pleur, a mother from Chevy Chase, Maryland, committed back in 2001. Surprisingly, Grigor led a free life in the capital for over two decades until DNA evidence connected him to the crime.
Lauren Pleur, Leslie’s daughter, revealed that she had once dated Grigor when they were both just 15. At the time of her mother’s death, she was 24 years old. Montgomery County authorities had submitted DNA found under Leslie’s fingernails to be compared with that of Grigor’s distant relatives in Romania, which eventually led to identifying him as a suspect last year, according to attorney John McCarthy.
Losing her mother was evidently traumatic for Lauren. Family lawyer Benjamin Kurtz expressed that after 24 long years, Lauren and her loved ones finally received the closure and justice they had been waiting for. He mentioned the additional pain knowing the perpetrator had been someone from within their community.
Kurtz noted that even with Grigor’s guilty plea, it doesn’t replace the time lost or the pain of not having her mother. Nevertheless, it allows Lauren to begin the healing process and find some peace, as Grigor has now been brought to justice.
Leslie’s murder was particularly brutal; it involved blunt force trauma and strangulation. Her death was discovered on May 2, 2001, when her boss found her lifeless in her home, with signs of violence evident throughout the house.
In an interesting turn of events, in 2022, the police submitted the collected DNA to a lab for analysis, which eventually pointed to Grigor as a significant suspect. McCarthy described the case as historic, marking the first time family DNA was utilized in solving a cold case murder in the county.
Former detective Ted Williams commended the police for their long-term efforts in this case, highlighting how advancements in DNA technology ultimately helped in apprehending Grigor, who seemed to have evaded suspicion for years.
Grigor was also noted to have worked in real estate and was generally liked as a calm, friendly individual. However, his past included being a troubled high school student, dealing with a turbulent home life. During their high school relationship, Lauren defended him against allegations of a prior assault, expressing her belief in his innocence even then.
As for the motive behind Pleur’s murder, authorities haven’t disclosed any details. McCarthy pointed out that the onus is on Grigor to clarify why he committed such an act, indicating there were no indications it was premeditated.
In court, Grigor now faces a potential prison sentence of up to 30 years for second-degree murder, with the sentencing scheduled for August 28, 2025. McCarthy remembered Leslie as a wonderful person and acknowledged the tremendous sadness surrounding her loss.
