Ethical Investigation Sought Over Trump’s Potential Qatar Jet Gift
Democrats are advocating for an ethical investigation regarding President Donald Trump’s plan to accept a $400 million jet from Qatar. The aircraft is set to serve temporarily as the Air Force before transitioning to Trump’s presidential library.
Representative Ritchie Torres, a Democrat from New York, addressed a letter to the Government Accountability Office, claiming that this jet would be the most expensive gift ever received by a US president. He criticized the transaction as a “flying grift,” suggesting it violates the emoluments clause of the US Constitution, which prohibits public officials from accepting gifts from foreign governments.
“I’m raising concerns about reports that President Trump may receive a stunning aircraft (Boeing 747-8) from Qatar,” Torres stated, calling it a “palace in the sky.”
According to Torres, this “Flying Grift” adds to a troubling narrative of unprecedented presidential perks in American history.
Meanwhile, Trump hinted at “a very big announcement” ahead of his Middle East trip, with public anticipation running high.
In a post on social media, Trump defended the deal, stating that the Department of Defense is offering a free aircraft to replace the older Air Force One, characterizing the arrangement as transparent. He took shots at Democrats, labeling them “losers.”
ABC News reported that Trump visited a plane in West Palm Beach earlier this year. Although the deal is slated for announcement during an upcoming trip to the Middle East, its execution is not expected immediately. Qatari officials hope to navigate the donation through the Pentagon.
While discussions are ongoing about the temporary transfer of the aircraft, legal departments on both sides are still reviewing the matter, and a decision has yet to be reached.
Historically, Trump has navigated around the emoluments clause by categorizing gifts he receives during his presidency as property of the president’s office, which would eventually be archived in the Presidential Library. Although he retains some access to these items, he technically does not own them outright and must purchase them from the government.
The logistics surrounding the costs for maintenance and operations of the jet, once it’s within the presidential library, remain unclear.
Before his presidency, Trump was known for traveling on his private jet, a Boeing 757 dubbed Trump Force 1, which garnered significant attention during campaign events.
