Can an unlicensed doctor become the next surgeon general of the United States?

Despite being President Donald Trump’s initial pick for surgeon general, Janet Neshwat’s selection quickly stirred controversy among his supporters. They criticized her for her past endorsements of community vaccinations, boosters, and masking—positions they felt were out of touch with their views.

Sarah Gonzalez, a commentator, expressed skepticism about the choice, noting, “It seems odd to attract someone like RFK Jr. while picking a surgeon general who has consistently supported well-established health measures.” She suggested that this reflects a disconnect with Trump’s base.

Following the backlash, Trump withdrew his support for Neshwat and shifted his attention to appointing Dr. Casey Means. Yet, even this choice has left his supporters divided.

“The community is in a state of confusion right now. This division is frustrating, especially since we had such a significant opportunity,” one supporter commented.

In reaction to Dr. Means’ nomination, RFK Jr. shared his thoughts, saying that she embodies the vision they want to present to the public in a debate on the matter. He praised her ability to clearly communicate ideas and acknowledged her successful background.

“She earned top honors at Stanford and has consistently outperformed in her career,” RFK remarked. He pointed out that she left traditional medicine because she felt it was ineffective, particularly in addressing dietary influences on health.

Gonzalez supported RFK’s perspective, expressing uncertainty about the qualifications necessary to practice medicine effectively today. She highlighted that many doctors relied on outdated guidelines, like rigid social distancing, which lack solid scientific backing.

“America is experiencing unprecedented health challenges,” she noted. “With chronic health issues on the rise, it’s crucial that we have someone who thinks critically—like Dr. Means—rather than simply repeating the status quo.”
