Cornyn relies on an old Trump endorsement as Paxton gains ground in the polls.

Cornyn’s Trump Ties Amid Senate Race Concerns

Republican Senator John Cornyn from Texas has amplified his previous endorsement of President Donald Trump on Monday, as the 2026 Senate races heat up.

His campaign account shared a statement reflecting Cornyn’s support for Trump from 2020, asserting he votes “99% of the time” with the president and expressing a commitment to “fight for the president and Texas.” Meanwhile, early ballot results suggest Cornyn is facing a significant challenge from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.

Attempts to reach Cornyn’s representatives for comments went unanswered.

There are whispers that Cornyn might struggle despite the president’s backing.

It’s noteworthy that as Paxton entered the primary race, Cornyn’s campaign focused heavily on linking himself to Trump. Notably, a glance at his recent social media posts shows a consistent mention of Trump, even though the former president has yet to back any candidate in the primary.

The stakes may be higher for Cornyn than anticipated. Recent polling indicates that Paxton is leading Cornyn by 16 points, according to data released by the Senate Leadership Fund on Monday. This survey further reveals that Paxton is also ahead by 10 points in a potential three-way race, which includes Texas Republican Representative Wesley Hunt, who is contemplating a Senate run in 2026.

Interestingly, the same poll provides a glimmer of hope for Cornyn. It suggests he could still be a stronger contender than Paxton in a general election matchup against a former Democrat, who appears to be weighing a run for the Senate. According to these polls, Cornyn is currently a notch above Allred, while Paxton falls six points short against the same contender.

Interestingly, Allred lost nearly nine points in his previous attempt against Texas Representative Ted Cruz in 2024.
