Sunny Hostin Expresses Optimism About Pope Leo XIV
On Monday, “The View” co-host Sunny Hostin shared her newfound admiration for Pope Leo XIV, particularly after learning about his African descent.
Previously, Hostin had voiced her concerns regarding the new pope following some controversial comments he made about “gay lifestyles.” However, after discovering that both of her maternal grandparents were described as “people of color” and that her grandfather was born in Haiti, she felt more hopeful.
“You know, it’s interesting to think about the comments made about Haiti. The new American Pope has Haitian and Black roots! So, it turns out we really do have a Black pope. That’s just fantastic,” she said enthusiastically.
Hostin had previously mentioned worries about potential impacts on the LGBTQ community, referencing a statement Pope Leo made in 2012 where he criticized pop culture’s acceptance of certain lifestyles. Yet, after his recent remarks in 2023, she seems to feel more encouraged.
She stated, “He believes, like Pope Francis, that the church should be welcoming to everyone. I really like this guy! I love the Pope,” emphasizing her approval of his inclusivity.
Her co-hosts, Ana Navarro and Whoopi Goldberg, also offered praise for Pope Leo after hearing his early speeches supporting imprisoned journalists. Goldberg expressed her appreciation saying, “He stands in solidarity with journalists who report the truth, which is something we need a lot more of.”
Navarro added, “One of his first actions being to meet with and advocate for journalists is significant. It’s quite timely for an American pope, considering what’s happening in our country. It shows that not all American leaders share the same views, and having an American Pope who can address immigration issues is important.”
Affirming her enthusiasm, Hostin likened Pope Leo to “the Black Pope” as her fellow co-hosts expressed their excitement about him.
