Actor Gerard Depardieu Convicted in Sexual Assault Case

Paris Court Convicts Gerard Depardieu

A court in Paris has found French actor Gerard Depardieu guilty of sexually assaulting two women during the filming of a movie in 2021, resulting in an 18-month suspended sentence.

This case stands out as a significant moment in the #MeToo movement as it was presented before a French judge. Despite his repeated denials of any wrongdoing, Judge Thierry Donard expressed skepticism towards Depardieu’s version of events.

One of the plaintiffs, a set decorator named Amelie K, recounted in court how Depardieu had forcibly held her body while making vulgar comments. “He touched everything, including my breasts,” she reported. “I was terrified, and he was laughing.”

The judge noted that two witnesses corroborated her testimony, while Depardieu did not maintain a consistent narrative regarding the incident.

While the #MeToo movement has sparked shifts in societal views on sexual violence, it appears to have struggled to achieve the same level of impact in France as it has in the United States.
