Hemp, Greenwood, and Stanway return in significant Euros boost for England

The English trio of Lauren Hemp, Alex Greenwood, and Georgia Stanway is back in Sarina Wiegman’s squad for the upcoming Nations League matches against Portugal and Spain after recovering from lengthy knee injuries.

Wiegman has also called up Ella Morris from Tottenham Hotspur, possibly enhancing the chances of a late entry into the tournament team slated for July. This follows the last match played in April.

The 19-year-old Stanway, initially brought in as a late replacement due to an injury in mid-April, has managed to impress Wiegman enough to secure a place in the senior setup.

Aston Villa midfielder Missy Boehn has also made her return, previously serving as captain for the under-23 team. Wiegman announced her roster a week earlier than usual in preparation for the away match in Portugal on June 3, just ahead of another home game at Wembley on May 30. It will be the final opportunity for England to evaluate players before finalizing the Euro squad later in June.

Hemp, Greenwood, and Stanway each suffered knee injuries between November and January, with Hemp returning to Manchester City’s lineup in April, while Stanway’s competition status remains uncertain as she continues her treatment.

“Seeing 27 players in our environment is a really positive sign,” Wiegman stated. “This will provide us better insights for making important decisions soon. Naming the team 12 days before the window opens also clarifies expectations for players as the season wraps up.”

England’s Euro journey is set to kick off against their French Group D rivals in Zurich on July 5, with hopes of defending their title in the final in Basel on July 27.
