Tragic Incident Involving Pet Lion in Iraq
Last Thursday, a 50-year-old man named Aqil Fakhr al-Din was tragically killed and partially consumed by his pet lion at his home in Kufa. This shocking event has sent ripples through the Al Balakiya district of Najaf Governorate.
The incident occurred when al-Din approached the lion’s cage in the garden of his home, where he had kept various exotic animals, including lions, for several years. As he got too close, the lion attacked, delivering devastating bites to his neck and chest.
Reports from local sources indicate that al-Din suffered severe injuries, which led to his death. In a harrowing turn, the lion proceeded to consume a large portion of his body. Al-Din was known in the community for his unusual collection of pets.
Neighbors heard the commotion and rushed to help. In a desperate attempt, one neighbor shot the lion to halt the attack. The aftermath was distressing, with views of a lion lying in a pool of blood circulating on social media.
This incident raises urgent questions regarding the practice of keeping predatory animals as pets in Iraq. Without adequate legal regulations or veterinary oversight, such situations pose significant risks to public safety.
