US Special Envoy Steve Witkov visited Tel Aviv’s Hostage Square on Tuesday to engage with the remaining Israeli prisoners of war and their supporters, recognizing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s role in the recent release of American-Israeli Edan Alexander.
Witkov’s commendation comes after unverified reports over the weekend suggested he had previously criticized Netanyahu for persisting in the conflict with Hamas. This has raised concerns both within Israel and internationally about whether the Trump administration is distancing itself from Netanyahu in pursuit of a deal.
As for Netanyahu’s era, it has been noted:
While speaking to the families of a slain American-Israeli hostage at “Hostage Square,” Witkov appeared to commend Netanyahu’s determination regarding Edan Alexander’s release, describing his efforts as pivotal in the negotiations.
…
“The prime minister was firm. He was completely committed to this agreement, and Ron Dahmer was key in the negotiations,” he remarked.
“I can tell you, the pressure that Vivi Bibi exerted after the second phase was crucial,” he added.
Netanyahu expressed confidence in both President Trump’s diplomatic initiatives and the military pressure to persuade Hamas regarding hostage releases. This situation seems to be complex, as Hamas leveraged the release for its own agenda while calling for an end to hostilities.
Nevertheless, Alexander’s release came with some concessions from Hamas, including a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of certain prisoners.
Witkov was joined by hostage negotiator Adam Bohler during the visit to Hostage Square. In a discussion at an office near the Hostage and Missing Family Forum, families of hostages expressed hope that over 50 remaining captives, including at least 20 who are alive, could be freed. Witkov and Bohler plan to travel to Doha, Qatar this week for further negotiations aligned with Trump’s visit to the country.
