A perplexing situation is unfolding in the Bay Area as numerous birds are meeting what seems to be a sudden and violent end in local neighborhoods.
In recent months, reports have emerged of birds crashing to the ground in city streets and backyards, raising questions about the causes behind these strange deaths.
Speculation is running high regarding potential reasons, ranging from aerial threats to issues linked to power lines.
“When they land, it happens instantly; they burst, and it’s quite shocking,” commented Maxilian Boring, a Richmond local. “It’s really unsettling,” he added.
Some residents have caught these bizarre incidents on doorbell cameras. One video recorded a loud pop before a bird plummeted to the ground, leaving onlookers in disbelief.
“It sounded like a firecracker, and it crashed down like a shooting star,” witness Mark Horner described, noting that he was right under the bird at the time. “I could tell the sound came from above the pole.”
Some birds have reportedly been electrocuted after landing on power lines, which many residents believe might be contributing to the issue. Concerned neighbors have prompted Pacific Gas and Electric and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) to look into the matter and examine the deceased birds.
The utility company mentioned that findings showed no signs of electric shock in the birds, attributing their deaths instead to trauma, possibly from BB guns or slingshots.
This explanation, however, hasn’t convinced many locals.
“I don’t think BB guns would create a sound like that,” noted resident Heather Jones. “It definitely sounds more like a firecracker.”
Other residents, including Yang Solomon, echoed this sentiment, expressing doubt about the reliability of the official claims regarding pellet guns.
Wildlife officials confirmed an ongoing investigation and noted that they have received photos of other birds displaying trauma. However, they couldn’t pinpoint the precise cause of the injuries in every case.
