Lawmaker Celebrates ‘Unity’ Before Reportedly Getting Into a Physical Altercation With DHS Agents

Liberal lawmakers, previously critical of political opponents for a lack of civility, are now accused of inciting unrest among federal agents at immigration detention centers. Following a confrontation between agents and politicians, including Rep. Ramonica McQuiver from New Jersey, calls for oversight of the Delaney Hall facility have emerged. A variety of video footage shows McQuiver expressing frustration, seemingly agitating law enforcement in a chaotic scene.

According to DHS, McQuiver appeared in several clips, described as “wearing a red blazer,” allegedly confronting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. She was also featured in a media interview while on location. Neither McQuiver’s office nor DHS responded to requests for comments.

In other communications, McQuiver emphasized the need to remain composed during periods of tension, even as she reacted to a controversial photo of former President Donald Trump dressed as a pope. “Some thrive on anger and see our struggles as weakness,” she stated. “But we shouldn’t feed into that.” This remark was made shortly after the incident involving federal agents.

Back in March and April, New Jersey Democrats, including McQuiver, labeled the Trump administration’s actions as “terrible,” alleging it marked an era of political indifference. She noted that Democrats typically engage with a government that behaves professionally and promotes decency—a sentiment she feels has been lacking recently.

McQuiver expressed hope that leaders could embody maturity and foster effective dialogue to benefit everyone, yet she feels this hasn’t been happening. After a joint address by Trump, she and other lawmakers condemned his statements about “diversity, immigration, and other issues” as harmful. Previously, McQuiver supported Kamala Harris and Tim Walz for their presidential aspirations, urging voters to select candidates with integrity and hope.

Describing her interaction as a “surveillance visit,” McQuiver joined Bonnie Coleman, Robert Menendez, and Newark Mayor Russ Baraka outside the ICE facility. Although DHS claimed they participated in an incident at Delaney Hall, McQuiver and others denied any wrongdoing, with her suggesting that ICE escalated the conflict.

The Department of Justice announced that Baraka was detained on the premises for allegedly ignoring multiple warnings. Afterward, he spoke to a media outlet, claiming bystanders tried to intervene during his arrest.

The offices of Baraka and other involved lawmakers did not reply to inquiries for comments.
