Trump Removes All U.S. Sanctions on Syria’s New Government to Allow Them a Chance for Success

President Donald Trump has revealed plans for the U.S. to lift sanctions against Syria, signaling a shift in diplomatic relations as he engages with new GOP leadership.

During a speech on Tuesday in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, he made the announcement to a large crowd.

“I order a halt to sanctions against Syria to give them the opportunity to greatness,” Trump stated.

“In Syria, where we have witnessed so much misery and death, there is now a government in place that can stabilize the country and maintain peace. That’s what we aspire to see,” he added.

Syria has been under U.S. sanctions since 1979, with designations as a state sponsor of terrorism imposed in 2004 and further sanctions in 2011.

Recently, the Assad regime has faced collapse following an unexpected attack by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, an opposition group, in December 2024.

Arshara, who describes himself as “reformed,” was previously imprisoned in 2003 for his role in the Iraq invasion. He now seeks to project a more cooperative image towards the West.

With support from Russia and Iran, the Assad regime struggled to survive, ultimately leading to Assad fleeing to Moscow after losing control of Damascus.

“In Syria, they’ve endured tragedy, war, and years of killing. That’s why my administration is taking the necessary first steps to restore normal relations between the United States and Syria for the first time in over a decade,” Trump remarked.

Trump is expected to meet with Alshara on Wednesday, marking the first interactions between Syrian leaders and U.S. officials since 2000 when Hafez Assad met former President Bill Clinton.

“Now is their time to shine,” Trump emphasized. “So, do your best, Syria. Honestly, show me something very special, just like you did in Saudi Arabia.”
