The Israeli Defense Force (IDF) seems to have targeted Muhammad Sinwar, who is the brother of the deceased Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, killed by IDF forces in Gaza last October.
Muhammad Sinwar assumed leadership of Hamas in Gaza following his brother’s death.
In a statement about the airstrike, the IDF, while not directly naming Sinwar, indicated:
Recently, the IDF and ISA [Israel Security Agency] targeted Hamas terrorists at a command and control center located beneath a European hospital in Khan Yunis in southern Gaza.
The Hamas organization continues to exploit hospitals in Gaza for terrorist purposes, showing a cynical use of both the hospital and the innocent civilians nearby.
Various precautions were taken both before and during the strike to reduce the risk of civilian casualties, including precision munitions, aerial surveillance, and intelligence gathering.
The IDF and ISA are committed to eliminating threats to Israeli citizens.
Additionally, there have been reports indicating that “some time prior, the target of Israeli airstrikes at a European hospital in southern Gaza was Hamas leader Muhammad Sinwar.”
Hamas acknowledged the loss of several individuals in the airstrike, although they did not confirm Sinwar’s death specifically.
In Israel, it was a busy day, with Houthi rebels firing two missiles at the country from Yemen. These were intercepted by the IDF, which serves as a reminder that the Houthis persist in targeting Israel despite President Donald Trump’s declaration of a ceasefire involving US and Iran-supported terrorist groups.
There have also been indications that Israel might entertain the notion of a temporary ceasefire in Gaza as part of a potential deal for hostages, despite stating earlier that no compromises or ceasefires were offered in exchange for the release of US and Israeli hostage Edan Alexander.
All these developments occurred during Trump’s visit to Saudi Arabia and other Arab nations.
Israeli airstrikes suggest that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu intends to safeguard his country amidst ongoing diplomatic maneuvers involving Arab nations and Iran.
